Appearance of independent persons is hindered, and ideally precluded altogether. No, I don’t think that Putin will step aside. Moreover, there is no any need for him to change the Constitution (it is just his rhetoric) because in Russia (not like in the US) the Constitution is not a guiding political document but an empty formality. Under Stalin there was a perfectly written Constitution that fundamentally disagreed with the real life. Putin really believes that he has the historical mission not only to preserve Russia but to make Russia great again just like Trump wants to make America great again. However, Russia’s greatness (Velikoderzhavie) means completely the opposite America’s greatness. In reality, it means to make the Russian power in Kremlin great again and to preserve it forever.
This is why I consider both Alexey Navalny and Igor Strelkov as Kremlin’s project. In the Russian system of power there is no any opportunity for any independent person to appear and become an independent and well-known politician. This is why this debate make no sense for me because it is just an informational noise. It only serves Kremlin’s purpose to make the Russian elections look normal and even more colorful (just like in the US!). Though I watched them. All I can say is that Navalny looked much weaker than the FSB officer Strelkov with his military experience and strong anti-Western and nationalist convictions. Moreover, he looked ill prepared not only to reform Russia but to understand what country he is going to deal with.
In conclusion, I could give you a link to my short article “Russia’s Decline as a ‘Brave Re-Stalinized World’” which is in English.
https://jamestown.org/program/irina-pavlova-russias-decline-as-a-brave-re-stalinized-world/

Irina Pavlovahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17760804948375054214noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-102606998749589544.post-32492664718846813072017-07-21T11:28:46.952-07:002017-07-21T11:28:46.952-07:00II am an American who has been reading your blog w...II am an American who has been reading your blog with the help of an online translator, and appreciate the perspective you lend to the current political state of Russia.

I read an articles on TASS and RadioFreeEurope today about Putin being undecided about running in 2018. He says he has no intention to amend the Constitution further. Do you think it's possible he may actually see it in his interest to step aside?

Even going so far as to allow normal elections to take place?

I also wanted to know your thoughts on the youtube debate between Alexei Navalny and nationalist Igor Strelkov. Thank you!
